Frida Friday, but make it Selena's Birthday Party

This weekend I found myself doom scrolling on Instagram when I came across a post from Las Ofrendas and was reminded that it was time for the yearly Bidi Bidi Birthday bash at The Brewtorium. I am not being hyperbolic when I say that I jumped up from the couch, grabbed my camera, and shouted at my boyfriend "I have to go! I have to take photos of Selena's birthday party!" and dashed out the door.

I love this event! A market surrounded by other Latines, mi cultura, beautiful jewelry, good music, and Selena blasting from the speakers?! Yes. Please.

I wasn't officially hired to photograph this event, but I couldn't help myself. I wandered around the market outside as the sun beat down on everyone, but it didn't get us down.

Loteria is one of my favorite familial past times and only last year I was shocked to learn that not everybody knew what it was. Now here it was, being celebrated.

The real troopers are the vendors....

Not only do they make beautiful things and pour delicious drinks and make tasty salsas and honey and baked goods, but they also stand outside with joy all over their faces despite the heat! Let me tell you, it will always be worth it to go stand in the heat if it means I get to help support my community. I always try to stock up on earrings I won't be able to get anywhere else.

More of the lovely vendors...but make it vertical.

And then there's the lovely gente that continues to show up.

I love going and being surrounded by folks that share a love for this beautiful culture that I lovingly call mine. Even if you aren't Latine, I will always appreciate you showing up to celebrate our cultura and wanting to support the BIPOC community!

Couldn't make it this year?

Well, there's always next year! Also, Frida Friday happens throughout the year in Austin so you can always catch another market and support the community on another date. Because every day is a good day to uplift one another.
